How to Wear Gold Shoes (Heel Heights + Outfits That Work)

Gold shoes are the one thing I reach for when I want an outfit to feel finished without adding more. I’ve worn gold flats to the farmer’s market and gold heels to summer weddings. They work as dressed up or dressed down, in a way that most shoes don’t. What I’ve learned is that the style matters more than the shade. Below I’m sharing the styles I keep coming back to, how I wear each one, and what to know before you buy.

How To Wear Gold Shoes

Flat gold sandals like thongs, wraps, or anything low, are my most-reached-for summer shoes. They work with linen pants, a sundress, or shorts. The gold acts almost like a neutral, which is why it works with so many outfits.

For evenings, parties, or weddings, a strappy heel or block heel in gold does more work than almost any other shoe color. You don’t need a high heel to look dressed up. The color does the dressing up for you, regardless of heel height.

For work or a smart casual setting, a closed-toe block heel in metallic gold is the most versatile. It works equally well with pants, a midi skirt, or even a tailored dress.

If you’re unsure where to start, a flat gold sandal for daytime and a 2–3 inch strappy heel for evening will cover almost everything in your wardrobe.

How to Choose the Right Heel Height

I almost never reach for a heel over 3 inches, and I don’t think you need to. For dressier occasions, 2.8″ is my ideal — high enough to feel polished, low enough to actually wear all evening. With a midi dress, I look for something over 2.5″ so the proportions work at my height. For shorter dresses or more casual outfits, I reach for a flat or a low wedge. The gold color does enough work that you don’t need height to make the shoe feel special.

Strappy Heels: The Most Versatile Gold Shoes to Own

Strappy gold heels are the most versatile heel you can own. They work for weddings, summer parties, graduations, and honestly just as well with white jeans for dinner out. My favorite pair is the Sofia by Inez. The leather is genuinely soft from the first wear, the cushioned footbed with arch support makes them wearable for hours. The 2.8″ heel is the right height for occasions where you want to look dressed up, but comfortable enough to wear all evening.

Inez offers slim, standard, and roomy widths. I took a half size up in this style (I generally wear a 7 or 7.5). I wear a 7.5 standard in the Sofia. The gold is a soft, warm tone, not too yellow and not too silver, which makes them easy to mix with different jewelry metals. I’ve featured these in my summer shoes post as well, and they’re one of the pairs I keep coming back to.

Gold Mules

A gold mule is the easiest heel to wear. No straps, no buckles, just slip on and go. The silhouette works with everything from tailored pants to a summer midi dress. The Isa style pictured above is currently available in a nude shade. For a beautiful gold alternative, my top pick is the Selene by Margaux which has a 2″ heel. It has a soft high-quality leather, and a clean, minimal shape that doesn’t compete with your outfit. Margaux runs true to size and offers medium, narrow, and wide sizes, which is worth noting.

Gold Thong Sandals

Gold shoes don’t have to be heels. In fact, gold flip-flops are one of my favorite ways to make a casual outfit a little more special. I’ve had my Palm Beach Sandal Company thong sandals for years and they still get pulled out every summer. I wear them to the pool, the farmer’s market, and anywhere I want to slip on and go. They do take a few wears to fully soften up, but once they do they’re genuinely comfortable for long days on your feet. The quality of the hand-selected materials shows in how well they’ve held up season after season. I wear a size 7.5.

Metallic Gold Block Heels

Block heels are one of the most comfortable options. The wider base gives you stability without sacrificing height. They’re also the smartest choice for outdoor weddings and garden parties where a stiletto would sink into the grass. I have two gold block heels and I reach for them in different situations.

The Lulu by Inez has a wider, chunkier block which makes it naturally more casual. I wear mine most with summer dresses and linen pants. It’s my go-to when I want a little height without the shoe feeling too dressy. It fits slightly large so I’d size down if you’re between sizes, I wear a size 7. Sarah Flint Perfect Block heels Gold holiday shoes

The Perfect Block sandal by Sarah Flint has a slimmer block heel which dresses it up considerably. I reach for these gold shoes when I want to elevate a casual outfit, or for a more formal occasion like an outdoor wedding. I love this style so much I have it in several colors. I wear a size 37.5.

Gold Ankle Wrap Sandals

A flat ankle wrap sandal is one of the prettiest gold shoes you can own. The strappy, Grecian-style silhouette feels intentional without trying too hard, and the flat sole makes them comfortable enough for a full day out. I wear mine with shorter hemlines like dresses, mini skirts, and shorts. I reach for these when I want to wear a flat shoe, but still add something a little more interesting. The wrap detail acts almost like jewelry for the outfit.

The Margaux Wrap Sandal in Champagne Nappa is my pick here. The leather is soft, the straps sit cleanly around the ankle, and the fit is true to size. I prefer these in a size 7.5.

Gold Wedge Heels

A gold wedge sits in that sweet spot between a flat sandal and a heel. You get the lift without a traditional heel. It’s what I reach for, for casual summer outfits where a flat feels too low but a strappy heel feels like too much. I’ve had mine for several summers and they still look great. My go-to pairing is a white jean skirt, but they work equally well with shorts or a casual sundress. For a 2″ wedge like mine, keep it casual. If you’re wearing a midi or maxi dress or want something slightly dressier, I’d look for a wedge closer to 3″. My specific style is sold out but I’ve linked similar options below.

Gold Shoes: A Note on Comfort

I only recommend shoes I’d actually wear for hours. When I’m shopping for gold shoes, I look for a cushioned footbed, arch support if possible, and nothing that requires a painful break-in period. Natural leather will soften and stretch slightly, but a shoe should feel good from the first wear. If it doesn’t, it won’t get worn.

Every brand featured in this post earns its place in comfort as much as style. If you want to go deeper on sizing, styling, and which styles are worth the investment, I have a full Inez Shoes Review, a Margaux Shoes Review, and a Sarah Flint Shoe Guide.
