What to Wear Instead of Jeans: Stylish Alternatives for Fall and Winter
If you’re wondering what to wear instead of jeans in fall and winter, I have a few alternatives that I wear regularly. I love jeans, but I also like having other pants that work with the sweaters, jackets, and shoes already in my closet.
Corduroy, chinos, pull-on pants, and even velvet are all in my regular rotation. Some are more comfortable than jeans, while others are a nice way to change up an everyday outfit. Below, I’m sharing the pairs I own, how they fit on my 5’2″ frame, and which ones I think are worth buying.
What to Wear Instead of Jeans in Fall and Winter
Corduroy Pants

If you love wearing jeans but sometimes find denim too stiff or rigid, corduroy pants are a great alternative. I find them really soft and comfortable to wear, especially during the colder months. Plus, the texture adds a little something different to an everyday outfit.
What I love most is that I can style corduroys exactly like my jeans. I wear them with button-up shirts, sweaters, loafers, and ankle boots, so I don’t have to think about putting together an entirely different outfit.
If you’re shopping for corduroys, I’d start with a straight-leg or slightly relaxed style. And don’t feel limited to the usual brown and tan. I love corduroy in colors like burgundy, olive, navy, and black for fall and winter.
What I’m Wearing:
Blue corduroy pants: fit true to size. I’m wearing the size 0 in the petite length.
Black corduroy pants: fit true to my usual jean size. I’m wearing size 24.
Pull-On Pants

For days when comfort is the priority, I love a good pair of pull-on pants. They’re a nice alternative to jeans when you’re traveling, running errands, or just don’t want to wear denim.
My AYR High Hopes pants are one of my favorite pairs. They have a relaxed fit and an elastic waist, so they’re comfortable enough to wear all day. But they don’t look like sweatpants, and that’s what I love about them. I’ve found them especially useful for travel. You can also see how I dress them up in my AYR High Hopes pants review.
I look for pairs with a straight or relaxed leg like these, rather than a traditional jogger silhouette. That way, you can wear them with most of the same tops and shoes you’d normally pair with jeans.
Chinos

When I want to be comfortable but look a little more pulled together than I would in jeans, chinos are one of my favorite options. They have a more polished look than denim but are still casual enough for everyday wear. I tend to reach for mine most often in spring and early fall.
Since I love wearing chinos with loafers and ballet flats, I’m particular about the length, especially at 5’2″. I look for pairs like these that fall nicely over my shoes without dragging on the ground. A straight or slightly wide-leg style is my preference because I can dress them up a little or keep them casual.
Velvet Pants

Velvet pants might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you’re looking for alternatives to jeans, but I actually wear mine quite casually. In fact, one of my favorite pairs of straight-leg jeans now comes in velvet. They have the same fit and style, but the velvet makes them feel a little more special. If you’re curious about the denim version, you can read my full PAIGE jeans review here.
I love pairing my velvet pants with an ivory sweater and loafers or flats. It’s an easy daytime outfit, and the velvet adds a little texture without making it look too dressy. They’re also incredibly soft and comfortable enough to wear all day.
I think the key to wearing velvet casually is to keep the rest of your outfit simple. A cotton or cashmere sweater, leather shoes, and an everyday bag are all you need. I’d save the silk blouses and dressier accessories for evening.
The two pairs of velvet pants I wear most are:
Straight-leg velvet pants: At 5’2″, I can wear these with flats.
Subtle flare velvet pants: These need a small heel at my height. You can also save 20% with code TARAT20.
If you like the idea of wearing dressier fabrics during the day, I also have some outfit ideas for how to style satin pants.
Which Jeans Alternative Is Best for You?
If you’re looking for something that feels most like jeans, I’d start with corduroy pants. They’re casual, easy to style, and work with nearly everything you’d normally wear with denim.
For comfort, my pick is pull-on pants, especially the AYR High Hopes. They’re the pair I reach for when I want something relaxed but still want to look put together. Plus they are easy to dress up too.
Chinos are a great everyday option, especially if you prefer a more classic look. I wear mine most often in the spring because they are usually light. And if you want something that can go from daytime to dinner, I’d choose velvet pants.
What to Wear Instead of Jeans: Final Thoughts
As much as I love jeans, it’s nice to have other options in my closet. And what I love about these alternatives is that I can wear them with so many of the sweaters, jackets, and shoes I already own.
These are the pants I personally wear and recommend, and I’ll continue adding to this list as I find more styles worth sharing.
