Marta Scarampi Tara Cape

Marta Scarampi: The Tara Cape

I’m thrilled to share with you the new Tara Cape made in collaboration with the Italian brand Marta Scarampi! When Marta reached out to ask me if I wanted to help launch her new “cape builder” it was an immediate yes! As you may know, I’m a huge fan of the brand for its slow fashion approach to design and creation. Plus its classic Italian style that is best known for their capes. Now, let me introduce you to the Tara Cape and tell you how you can create a cape of your own!

Ivory wool Tara Cape

How to wear a wool cape

The Tara cape is inspired by classic styles with a vintage touch. The base of the cape is made from the Marta Scarampi Giulia cape. I chose this style for the 3 center buttons running down the front of the cape. It’s a simple yet very elegant look. To contrast the ivory boiled wool, I chose to have the buttons covered in a navy wool. Navy is a great neutral that compliments so many colors. Plus blue is my signature color so really wanted to add it to the Tara cape.

Adding a collar for me is a must! I just love collars and think they really add interest to an outfit. It’s what gives this a slight vintage flair and keeps the looks so timeless. The Giulia cape has pockets, so of course I left them on because everyone needs pockets!

I’m so happy with the Tara Cape! Marta’s capes are so well made and are true investment pieces that you will have in your closet forever. I love a cherished piece that can get passed on from one generation to the next. You can easily wear this with jeans for a day out, with pants for an office chic look, or pair this with a more formal or informal dress to add some glamour and coverage.

The Marta Scarampi Tara cape is now available for purchase. I think it’s perfect and will suit so many styles and occasions. However if you wish to create your own cape, let me show you how with the cape builder!

How to design your own cape

Choose Your Base

First, you will access the “Cape Builder” here (just scroll down a bit after The Tara Cape). You will choose your base style. Either the Rachel Cape, or the Giulia cape (I chose the Giulia cape). What’s the difference between the two cape styles? The Rachel cape is double breasted so has 3 buttons that are off-center. This style already comes with a collar. The Giulia cape has 3 buttons down the center of the cape, and does not come with a collar. You can choose to add or remove the collar on either style.

Choose Your Fabric

Next you will choose your cape fabric. If you choose the Rachel cape, you have a choice between Gauguin wool (100% virgin boiled wool) or Mondrian (a light microfiber). The Giulia cape style is only available in the Gauguin wool (it’s my favorite fabric of the 2 choices!). Once you choose the fabric, you will choose your color based on the available options.

Choose Your Buttons

Marta Scarampi is all about sustainable choices. Extra fabric is used to cover buttons to limit excess waste. You can choose the color fabric you would like your buttons covered in. Think about the colors in your closet and what would coordinate best. You can keep it tonal or add a contrasting color.

Since the Rachel cape is double breasted, you have the option of choosing 3 or 6 buttons. I personally love the 6 buttons option, and it was a contender for the Tara Cape. It gives a slight military inspired vibe. If you are choosing the Giulia cape style as your base, you only have a 3 button option.

You Can Add a Collar and Pockets

You have the option to add or remove a collar and pockets. While I can see how you may or may not want a collar, depending on personal style and what you will be wearing this with, I’m a strong proponent of pockets! It’s just a comfortable and useful option to have.

Cape Size and Fit

Once you are done making your selections, the image of your cape will appear on your screen. You can choose your fit from petite, standard, and plus sizes. The sizing is mostly based on length, however the shoulder width on the plus size is wider than it is on the standard size.

Just know that these capes are truly beautiful and timeless pieces. They are always a conversation starter. These made in Italy capes are the most elegant choices for outerwear this year and every year!

The Tara cape features 100% virgin boiled wool in a cream color, with 3 navy wool covered buttons down the center. The added collar and pockets adds a special charm. Since I am 5’2″ I wear the petite length in Marta’s capes. When designing the Tara cape, I wanted something a classic, timeless, and a forever piece. I hope you agree that this certainly is!
