Interview with Marta Scarampi

Marta Scarampi is the epitome of Italian chic. Her effortless style is sophisticated, yet is easy-going and approachable. Founder of her namesake brand, Marta’s approach to design is unique and very personal. Known for her beautiful capes and chic dresses, Marta brings a refined elegance to dressing. In today’s interview with Marta Scarampi, Marta tells us a little bit about the brand, her inspiration, and her favorite Italian dish!

Now let’s dive in to the interview with Marta Scarampi!!

Your hometown of Torino, Italy inspires many of your collections. Have you lived in Torino your whole life?

Apart from my University years (3 in New York and 1 in Milan), I have lived in Torino my whole life. As the past is still so magnificently alive here and Torino’s people exude elegance and class, this city is one of my favorite places to people-watch. To just linger at a sidewalk cafe for a few minutes, you’ll see Torino women have an effortlessness to them. As an Italian from Torino, I grew up to love sophisticated things. I am inspired to share that sense of elegance through the clothes I design and sew.

Where did you study design?

I studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for my professors, a few classmates and the possibility to work in the classrooms till 2AM.

You co-own the Marta Scarampi brand with your sister. Have you always known you wanted to work together?

No, our parents brought us up thinking we could become whoever we wanted to be and anywhere in the world. Lucia being 3 years older, started her journey in Milan. When she finished her studies, she joined me in New York and started her career in high-end jewelry, while I was in my second year of University. We’ve always been very supportive of each other, and living together I had always seen the passion and strength she brought to her work. So when we started talking about joining forces, I had no doubt we would work well together (sister fights included 😉 ).

Capes are a central part of the Marta Scarampi brand. What inspired you to design your first cape?

I am fascinated by people, I like to listen to their wants, needs and their point of view on fashion, which very often is different from mine. Seeing how clothes are worn and styled differently from how I would, always brings me great inspiration. I’m a great supporter of individuality. I think a cape perfectly summarizes what allows a woman to feel elegant, sophisticated and walk in any room with class. Capes are a statement piece. A cape will last a lifetime, it adapts to every phase of a woman’s life and to every change her body undergoes.

You have an on-demand approach to fashion. Can you tell us more about that?

More than ever, we need to look at our wardrobes not just as a source of instant- gratification, but with a “less is more” mindset; quality over quantity should become our mantra. It’s time to invest in garments that will spark joy on a long-term basis.

We don’t produce stock, so we don’t have to sell already made and paid for garments. Our on-demand philosophy avoids product and fabric over-ordering and waste. Once you place your order, we will carefully produce your garments, with quality and care.

In addition to capes, you offer a beautiful selection of dresses, blazers, jackets, pants, and now sweaters! Do you have a favorite item to make?

I must admit that dresses are more fun to make. There are more details that need attention.

Can we expect any new products from Marta Scarampi in 2022?

Yes you can! All I’m gonna say is I’ve been wanting to launch a resort wear collection for a while now.

Let’s get a little more personal! What does your perfect vacation look like?

It really depends on what moment of my life I’m in. Right now I’d love to put my snowboard back on my feet for a weekend. If I have to think of a long holiday, the image is a big bed, white sheets, a sliding glass door open to the beach, and just 10 steps away from the sea… it’s probably more of a dream.

Favorite item in your purse?

My credit card, I love shopping.

Favorite Italian dish?

Pasta Aglio, Olio e Peperoncino (with a good dose of parmesan). Easy, simple to cook and absolutely delicious. It was my grandfather’s favorite. My dad loves it too and when I’m at my parents house I always want him to cook it for me. It’s my favorite and it feels like home.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

During winter it’s a little harder but I’m definitely a morning person. Once I wake up, I’m up and going from the moment I put my feet on the floor.

What is your go-to look?

Right now I’m into trousers. I love the Sara Pants and the matching hoodie, in my collection. If I were to head out and about in the city, I’d pair the pants with the Anna Blouse tucked in the front and throw on a Laura blazer. The Sara Hoodie I’d pair with jeans and leather brogues.
