How To Style A White Shirt: Easy Outfit Ideas That Feel Polished

A white shirt is one of the hardest working pieces in my closet, and that’s why I own several different styles. I wear them with denim, linen pants, skirts, and tailored trousers, and the styling is what makes each combination look completely different.

White shirts make denim more polished, balance something more feminine like a midi skirt, and work just as well with relaxed summer pants. Whether you gravitate toward a classic button-down, an oversized fit, or something with a little more detail, these are the outfit formulas I come back to most.

A white shirt and jeans is the original off-duty classic. The jeans are what change the entire feel of the outfit. Wide-leg jeans feel modern and relaxed. Straight-leg jeans give you something more polished that works for daytime with ballet flats or loafers, and easily transitions to evening with a great pair of pumps. Flare jeans or bootcut jeans lean more vintage, with a 70s feel that works especially well with a tucked-in shirt.

In warmer months, I love this look with flat sandals or woven ballet flats. In cooler weather, loafers and a structured blazer instantly make it feel a little more polished. This is also one of the easiest outfits to recreate with pieces you probably already own.

If you need some direction on which jeans are best for you, I shared my Mother jeans review here. They are my most worn denim brand.

 Shirt and Skirt Outfit

A white shirt pairs well with any skirt, but a silk slip skirt is one of my favorite combinations. It looks elevated but takes almost no effort to put together. Some slip skirts, like these, are even machine washable, which makes them that much easier to reach for.

For the transition into fall, a sweater over your shoulders is an easy way to extend the look. On cooler days, layer in knee-high boots and a long coat.

For a night out, the white shirt and jeans outfit will always work. But if you want the outfit to feel a little more dressed up, try wearing a white shirt with an extra detail like ruffle trim, or a lace top. You can even go with a silk button up shirt for an even dressier vibe. If you want to wear a classic white button-up shirt, try styling it with a mini skirt for a fun date night look.

How To Style A White Shirt For Work

A white shirt and pants is one of the most reliable office combinations. It works across all seasons and is polished without requiring much thought.

Fit is everything with this pairing. If you wear flats or loafers, hem your pants so they fall just above the floor in those shoes. The same rule applies for heels. If you find a pair of pants you really love, it’s worth buying two and hemming each to a different length. One for flats, and one for heels. This is especially useful if you’re petite.

A few styles I come back to most: these brown pants come in multiple colors, and short, regular, and tall inseams. I also have these straight-leg pants in a few colors, but at 5’2″ did have them hemmed. Both styles work for business casual and more formal settings.

White Shirt with Linen Pants

A white shirt and linen pants is one of my favorite combinations for warm weather because it always feels relaxed but still put together. I especially love this with leather sandals, woven bags, and gold jewelry for vacation, brunch, or casual summer dinners.
