How To Style A White Shirt: Chic Outfit Ideas
A white shirt is a timeless wardrobe staple that can be dressed up or down for any occasion. You may think it’s boring, but a classic white shirt is always a great idea. Whether you’re headed to the office, a casual brunch, or a night out on the town, knowing how to style a white shirt can elevate your look and make you feel effortlessly chic. From classic button-downs to oversized styles and trendy cropped versions, there are endless possibilities when it comes to incorporating this versatile piece into your outfit rotation. Plus they are great for any season! Even adding to your winter white outfits. Today I’m sharing different options for how to style a white shirt.
How To Style A White Shirt
White Shirt and Jeans Outfit
A tried and true classic is a white shirt and jeans. It’s the original off-duty model outfit. What I really love about this simple outfit formula is that you can change the vibe by changing the jeans. Wide-leg jeans and a white shirt is a very modern way to wear this outfit. Pair your white shirt with straight-leg jeans for a very elegant casual look. This looks great with ballet flats and leather loafers for daytime, and a great pair of pumps for evening. Flare-leg jeans or bootcut jeans will give more of a vintage 70s vibe. Either way, this is a go-to casual chic look that I wear on repeat.
Shirt and Skirt Outfit
You can pair a white button up shirt with any skirt. Make it a silk slip skirt and you have an elevated and classy outfit. Slip skirts are great because they are comfortable and super versatile. Some of them like these skirts, are even machine washable! By adding a sweater over your shoulders, this is a great summer to fall transition outfit. For cooler fall days, add knee high boots, a sweater, and a long coat.
How To Style A White Shirt For a Night Out
For a night out, the white shirt and jeans outfit discussed above will always work. But if you’re looking for something a bit dressier, try wearing a white shirt with an extra detail like ruffle trim, or a lace top. You can even go with a silk button up shirt for an even dressier vibe. If you want to wear a classic white button-up shirt, try styling it with a mini skirt for a fun date night look.
How To Style A White Shirt For Work
An easy and classic look for the office is a simple white shirt and pants. It’s comfortable, effortless, and business chic appropriate. Plus it works for all seasons! You can change your shoes depending on the weather. Just keep in mind the length of your pants. If you wear mostly flat shoes or loafers, get your pants hemmed to where they are just above the floor when wearing your shoes. If you prefer heels, whether they are pumps or boots, the same rule applies where you want the pants to fall just above the floor, and not puddle. Style tip (especially for petites)- if you find a pair of pants you really love, consider buying two pairs and hem the pants to accommodate both flat shoes and heels.
I have a a few favorite pant styles that all work well with white button-up shirts. Above I’m wearing these brown pants that come in short, regular, and tall inseams. Another favorite pair of pants that I have in a few colors are these straight-leg pants. Note because of my petite height (5’2″), I did have to get them hemmed. Both styles are great for business casual and more formal settings.
I hope I’ve helped you find timeless outfit inspiration for your white shirts. If you love wearing white, you may also enjoy reading the best white summer dresses for more classic style tips.
