Mackenzie Childs Royal Check Collection Review
Investing in dinnerware is subject to personal choice. Chances are if you are reading this, you love dinnerware as much as I do and are looking to invest in some. It’s a joke in my house about how much dinnerware I own. I truly love collecting it and using different settings for various occasions. I think it sets the tone for the occasion you are celebrating or just enjoying a nice weekly meal. Elevating little life experiences truly makes a different overall and creates warm memories. Today I’m sharing my review of the iconic Mackenzie Childs Royal Check collection.
The Royal Check collection is their blue and white set, that resembles their best known black and white Courtly Check collection. I’ll be sharing a bit about the brand, what sets them apart from other dinnerware brands, and what makes them special. Plus some of the pieces I love!
Mackenzie Child’s Royal Check Collection Review
Mackenzie Childs is an elevated home goods brand that focuses on handmade ceramics and enamelware. It is mainly sold online at the Mackenzie Childs site, at specialty boutiques, and select retailers such as Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Bloomingdales.
The brand is best known for their cheerful patterns and unique designs. I’ve been a fan for years. The iconic patterns catching my eye every time I go into a specialty home store. Especially the bold blue and white pattern named Royal Check. For blue and white lovers, this is the pattern for you! The check pattern also pairs well with other dinnerware you may have such as solids and florals.
What surprised me most about the dinnerware is that it is made from enamelware and not porcelain. Enamelware is very light and durable. It’s a great material to use for outdoor dining (much more elevated than melamine). I wasn’t initially sure how I felt about it but I can tell you, it’s easy to care for and incredibly light. I do love the change from a heavier porcelain piece. Let’s dive into the pieces I own and my thoughts about each one.
Royal Check Dinner Plates Review
The dinner plates are the base for the Mackenzie Child’s Royal Check collection. They are a great place to start if you want to invest in the look but don’t want to commit to the full collection. You can easily pair these dinner plates with solid white or blue floral salad plates, dessert plates, and serving pieces for a stunning table or kitchen island.
The plates are 10 inches in diameter which is an average size for a dinner plate. Made with a heavy-gauge steel underbody and glazed with hand-painted checks, rimmed in bronzed stainless steel. Quite durable but so light at the same time. Since these are handmade, no two will be exactly alike, and that is part of its charm. I love this classic pattern and shades of blue! Dishwasher safe but hand wash and dry is best.
Canapé Appetizer Plates
The small appetizer plates are great for parties where you will be serving quick bites. They are the size of a traditional bread and butter plate at 5 inches in diameter. Great for serving dinner rolls too! These little plates pair so well with the other serving pieces in the collection. These are also dishwasher safe but hand wash and dry is best.
Cheese Course Serving Platter
Every party needs a cheese platter in my opinion! I love serving a selection of at least 3 cheeses with crackers, grapes, apples, and nuts. The cheese course serving platter is 14.5 inches wide with a beautiful handle in the center. This is stationary and does not swivel so keep that in mind. Overall a beautiful pick and makes a great gift! Hand wash please.
Royal Check Salad Serving Set
A beautiful salad serving set helps to tie in your whole dinner look. I love this paired with the Royal Check dinner plates, but also really love this for everyday use with your plain dishes. It adds nice pop against the salad greens. The size is a nice 12 inches in diameter. The best part is that this set comes with acacia wood salad servers. This makes a great housewarming or newlywed gift! Hand wash.
Mackenzie Childs Large Oval Platter
We usually host Thanksgiving dinner and Easter, and always need a large serving platter. This oval platter is big enough to fit your Thanksgiving turkey or Easter ham. It’s is also great come summer when we bbq and need a serving platter for all the grilled foods. This royal check platter is 17.5″ wide x 22″ long, and also come in a medium and small size.
Two Tier Sweet Stand
The two tier sweet stand might just be my favorite piece from this collection. There is also a three tier stand if you need more room. I think the two tier stand is just enough for a cookie or cupcake assortment. The beautiful brass hardware and blue glass knob really makes this a statement piece! Pair this with the appetizer plates. Hand wash.
Royal Check Triplicity
The Mackenzie Child’s Royal Check Triplicity is such a versatile piece! You can use this for an assortment of nuts and candies, dipping sauces, crackers, or I like to use this for serving with ice cream. Use the triplicity for your ice cream toppings such as sprinkles, cookie crumbs, and cherries. The bowls are easily removed from the stand for cleaning. Keep this mind if you are moving this piece after filling it. Hold it by the center glass knob, not by the bowls. The bowls are dishwasher safe.
Seasonal Home Decor Collection
In addition to dinnerware and serving pieces, Mackenzie Childs has the cutest seasonal home decor items. Even more adorable in person, this happy reindeer is my favorite holiday piece I own. It’s so charming and makes a great addition to a festive home.
I love nutcrackers around the home. This Royal nutcracker is adorned with a velveteen coat accented with royal checks. I love this as a set with one on each side of the mantle, or on a buffet table. It’s an easy way to add some Christmas decorations in the dining room.
How to Care for Your Enamelware Collection
As mentioned above, each piece has its own care recommendations. In general, it is best to hand wash, however some pieces are dishwasher safe. Do not put your enamelware into the microwave! These have a steel underbody and everyone knows not to put your utensils in the microwave!
Overall this is a happy collection that is classic and so timeless. It’s versatile enough to be mixed and matched with other dinnerware, or enjoyed as a collection of its own.
