Tips For Decorating a Dining Room for Christmas

A dining room can be anything from a traditional dining room, to your kitchen island. The point is to tie it into the rest of your home with some holiday decor. A kitchen island would be beautiful decorated with a table runner and a few traditional Christmas accents. These tips can be used for any space you love to dine in.

Bring Your Personality In

The only way you will ever love your decor is to make sure your personality shines through in it. As soon as I saw these salad plates by Aerin Lauder I knew I had to have them. I love vintage botanicals so this was an immediate “yes”. The winter alpine theme is borrowed from the very elegant Swiss Chalet tradition. It’s giving me Slim Aarons vibes. While these plates are perfect for my Christmas dinner table, they will be equally fun to use in the Spring! Buy what you love and you will always use it!

Add Festive Greenery

Nothing warms up a dining room for Christmas like winter greenery. Add some holiday chair swags to every other chair, or just the host chairs. They really make an impact. Another way to easily decorate a dining room for Christmas is to add a centerpiece to your table. This will create a welcome and inviting feel for your guests. Have a place, such as a side table, or kitchen counter that you can quickly remove the centerpiece once dinner is served. You need to make room for those serving platters of food! For space saving, try adding these cute topiary place card holders instead.

I’m also a big fan of preserved boxwood mini wreaths. Depending on what type of dining room chairs you have, these little wreaths are such a fun way to add holiday cheer. I use mine on my kitchen counter stools.

Don’t forget your china cabinet. Add some holly and berries to warm up the space and tie it into the rest of your home. These faux greenery stems are meant for a vase, but I love them displayed this way.

Incorporate Your Dining Room Color Palette

You can easily just ignore your wall color, or you can incorporate it into your Christmas theme. Since my dining room walls are blue, I could easily create an icy winter theme with shades of blue, white, silver and gold. Alternatively, you can use all white plates as your base, and layer in some more traditional holiday colors with accents in your dining room color to tie it in! Read on for some ideas for incorporating other colors into your Christmas dining room decor.

5 Decorating Ideas for Christmas

Traditional Red and Green

A traditional red and green dining room will bring all kinds of merry into your holiday party. The options for decor and dining accents are abundant. Choose a traditional theme like these cute plates, or go more minimal with a simple design like these all season red rimmed plates and colored glasses.

Plaid Holiday Decor

Plaid is such a classic print that always has a place in a new traditional home. I especially love plaids mixed with florals for a balance between traditional masculine and feminine lines. They soften each other out and make the pairing more modern. Try a plaid charger with your white plates, or plaid dinner plates mixed with a floral accent plate for a very casual chic Christmas vibe.

Incorporating Blue Into Your Christmas Decor

It’s no secret I love blue. I also know that many of you are blue and white lovers too. It’s easy to incorporate blue into a winter theme. Use this as a base for icy hues. Blue blends so nicely with silver and gold. If you have young kids, just think how Elsa from the movie Frozen would decorate her dining room. 😉

Candy Cane Christmas Theme

Use some red and white plates to make a candy cane inspired table. Start with a basic white tablecloth, and add in a mix of red and white plates. If you already have white plates then this is easy. Add in some red accents such as dessert plates, salad plates, or decorative table accents. Place a candy cane on each dinner plate for a fun touch!

Silver and Gold Holiday Decorating

Silver and gold are timeless holiday colors. This is always an elegant choice for decorating your entire home. Plus they are nice neutrals that balance with all other colors. Here are some ways to add silver and gold into your dining room decor.
