Best Bags under $500: Timeless Picks For Everyday Style
Finding a handbag you love that also fits your budget isn’t always easy. So many of the beautiful bags I come across are well over $500, and even when I find one at a lower price, it still has to be comfortable to carry, hold what I need, and work with my wardrobe. That’s why I’m always on the lookout for the best bags under $500 that meet my specific needs and look more expensive than they are.
I’m pretty particular about my bags. I love soft leather, a comfortable strap, and a shape that looks just as good with jeans as it does with something dressier. And while I appreciate a beautiful designer bag, I’ve found plenty of options at lower price points that I genuinely love carrying. If you love the look and quality of a designer bag but don’t necessarily want to spend thousands, there are some beautiful options under $500.
I’ve rounded up my favorites, from the crossbody I wear all the time to a leather tote I use when I need to carry my laptop. Some are bags I own, while others are styles I’d consider buying myself. I’ll share why each one made my list and what to consider when deciding which bag is right for you.
Best Bags Under $500: Timeless Bags for Every Occasion
The Crossbody Bag

A crossbody bag is one of my favorite styles for everyday wear, especially when I’m traveling or spending the day walking around. I like having my hands free and keeping my bag close to me.
I’m particular about the strap length, especially at 5’2”, and I tend to choose neutral colors that work with most of my wardrobe. If I’m packing for a trip, I want a bag I can wear with just about everything I bring.
The Sézane Farrow is the crossbody I wear most, and own it in both raffia and leather. I love its bucket shape and how easily it works with my everyday outfits. It’s the bag I reach for when I want something practical without giving up a beautiful handbag.
Here are a few more crossbody bags under $500 worth considering:
The Classic Shoulder Bag

A classic shoulder bag is one of my favorite styles when I want something a little more polished than a crossbody. I look for a shape that sits comfortably under my arm and works just as well with jeans as it does when I’m dressed up.
The smaller shoulder bag I carry is one I reach for when I only need the essentials. I love its classic shape, and I think it’s so timeless and pretty. But it’s not the bag I’d choose for a day when I need to carry more. I generally use it when I’m going out to dinner or days where I only need my wallet, phone, keys and maybe a lipgloss. You can read more about this popular French bag in my other post.
If you love the look of a classic shoulder bag but need a little more room, I have another option that’s also more affordable below.

If you prefer a little extra room, this more affordable shoulder bag is worth considering. I especially like the easy shape and the fact that it’s soft, and not structured. That makes it really comfortable to carry. This would be a great option if you need a little more room but don’t want a large tote.

The Elegant Top Handle Bag

I love a top-handle bag. There’s something so ladylike about it. I especially appreciate this style in winter when I’m wearing a bulky coat. Shoulder straps don’t always stay in place over heavier layers, so being able to carry a bag by its handle is a nice option. My favorite styles also have an optional shoulder strap, so I can wear them both ways.
For warmer months, I love a straw bag like this one. It’s easy to carry with summer outfits and a pretty option for travel. And this leather bag has been my most reached for all-year-round because it goes with just about everything.
Here are a few more top-handle bags under $500 worth a look.
The Timeless Tote

I tend to carry smaller bags most days, but there are often times when I need more room. That’s when I reach for a tote. I like one that can hold everything I need without looking or feeling too bulky, especially since I’m only 5’2″.
This leather tote, in the 13-inch size is just right for me. It has plenty of room for my everyday things with space for my laptop when I need it, but it doesn’t overwhelm my frame. I also chose the zippered version, over the open-top they offer. I like being able to close everything up, especially when I’m traveling.
The leather is incredibly soft, and I love the simple shape. It’s the kind of tote I can carry with jeans and a jacket but also use when I head to the office. You can read my full Cuyana System Tote review for more details on what fits inside, how the size works on my 5’2″ frame, and whether I think it’s worth the price.
Special Occasion Bags Under $500
Sometimes a special occasion calls for a bag that feels a little more special too. I love a pretty bag that adds something to what I’m wearing, whether it’s for dinner, a wedding, or a holiday party. This is also where I’m more likely to choose a smaller bag since I really only need room for the essentials.
I especially like styles that give me more than one way to carry them. This beautiful leather bag caught my eye because you can wear it on your shoulder or crossbody and then carry it as a clutch when you want something a little dressier.
I’m definitely a bag person, but I’ve become much more particular about what I buy. I’d rather have a bag that I genuinely enjoy carrying and that works with my wardrobe than choose something simply because of the name on the label. There are so many beautiful bags under $500, and I’ll continue to update this post as I find more that I think are worth considering.
