Breaking up with my tailor….

We had a good run. 15 or so years. But it’s time to say goodbye. My tailor is moving out of the suburbs and packing it up to go back to New York City.

Being petite is kind of a drag when it comes to shopping for clothes. Clothes just don’t fall where they should. Cropped pants are not cropped at all. Midi length skirts are more ankle length. And those drapped asymmetrical hem tops usually just look like you wrapped a sheet around your body. So what to do?

Finding a tailor you can trust is essential for anyone, especially petites. A petite woman who likes to shop needs a good tailor in her life. A good tailor is someone you can count on in a pinch when an event suddenly sneaks up on you and you need those pants hemmed. I once had a 12 hour turn-around! She should also be honest with you and tell you when you really should just return the dress! She will tell you where the hem should fall on that pencil skirt. Trust and honesty are the foundations of any relationship, including one with the tailor!

Going to the tailor, for me, is like meeting an old girlfriend for lunch. You get so caught up in talking that you forget to look at the menu. I can’t tell you how many times a half hour has gone by and I haven’t even tried my clothes on yet. We talk about family, work, and of course fashion! I really enjoy talking to someone who loves fashion as much as I do. I love discussing fabrics and stitching, and drooling over a great brocade!

I’m hoping I can find a nice replacement that I can count on. On the other hand, NYC isn’t that far away. It wouldn’t be too crazy to drive in for a quick hem, would it??
