7 Summer Dinner Outfits That Feel Polished (But Still Easy)

Summer dinner outfits sound simple, but they’re one of the hardest to get right. You want to feel put together, but not overdressed. Easy, but still a little special.

Most summer nights fall somewhere in between. Not super casual, but not truly dressy either. And that’s exactly where getting dressed can feel tricky.

These are the outfits I come back to when I want something that feels polished, but still relaxed enough for real life. Whether it’s a casual dinner out, date night, or something slightly dressier, these always work.

What Is Casual Chic Attire For Summer?

Casual chic is that in-between style that can feel hard to pin down. But once you get it, it makes getting dressed so much easier. It’s more elevated than your everyday casual look like shorts and a tank top, but not as formal as something you’d wear to a wedding or big event.

It’s about looking like you put in some effort without looking like you tried too hard. Think relaxed but tailored. Polished but not overly done. A beautiful midi dress with leather sandals, linen pants with a pretty blouse, or even well-fitting jeans with a feminine top and thoughtful accessories.

If you’ve ever looked in the mirror and thought, “This is too casual,” or “This feels too dressy,” then you know exactly the struggle. Casual chic style lives in that sweet spot of comfortable, stylish, and just right for things like dinner with friends, date night, or a weekend gathering.

Good basics, a few thoughtful accessories, and pieces that can go dressier or more relaxed depending on how you style them. That’s really all it takes. If your style leans more casual overall, my guide to classic casual outfits is a good place to start.

My Go-To Summer Dinner Pieces

These are the pieces I rely on over and over again. If I’m not sure what to wear, I start here.

  • A linen or cotton dress
  • A “special” top (this is what makes simple outfits feel more complete)
  • White or light-wash jeans
  • Flat or low-heel sandals
  • A raffia bag

7 Summer Dinner Outfits That Feel Polished (But Still Easy)

These easy outfit ideas take the guesswork out of summer dinners. I usually start with one piece that feels a little more elevated like a dress, a jumpsuit, or a great top, and keep everything else simple.

Short Dress + Flat Sandals (Casual but Polished)

A short dress is usually my first choice for a casual summer dinner. It’s easy, comfortable, and always looks good. Especially with a wedge heel or a great flat sandal.

The shorter length keeps it relaxed, but the right fabric makes all the difference. I look for linen, cotton, or poplin so it still feels polished and not too beachy.

If I want it to feel a little dressier, I’ll switch to a heeled sandal. For something more casual, I love a flat wrap sandal to keep it relaxed but still chic.

Linen Pants + Feminine Top (For Casual Dinners)

Linen pants are probably what I wear most in the summer. They’re just easier when it’s hot, and they still feel really put together. I tend to reach for pairs that are a little more tailored through the leg, especially at 5’2″, so the overall look stays polished rather than too relaxed.

This is what I wear for more casual plans. A feminine top like something with eyelet or a bit of detail, is what makes it feel right for dinner. With espadrilles or a simple flat, the look stays relaxed but if you want it to feel dressier, switch to a heeled sandal. That’s usually all it takes.

I have a full post on the linen pants I wear most in summer if you want more options.

White Jeans + Statement Top (Easy Dinner Outfit That Always Works)

White jeans are one of those pieces I reach for all the time in the summer, especially at night. They feel a little more polished than regular denim, but still just as easy to wear.

For dinner, I’ll usually pair them with a top that has a bit of detail. Something like crochet, eyelet, or a softer blouse. That’s what makes the outfit feel a little more put together without doing much.

I keep the shoes simple here. A flat sandal works, but I’ll switch to a low heel if I want it to feel slightly more like a dinner outfit. I have a full post on how I style white jeans if you want more outfit ideas.

These are the pairs I wear most. This one needs a low heel at 5’2″ (I’m sharing the petite version that I wear, but it also comes in standard length), and this petite pair works with flats or a heel.

Here are a few of my favorite tops to pair with white jeans that make the whole look dinner ready.

Tailored Shorts + Button-Down (For More Casual Dinner Plans)

I don’t reach for shorts often for evening, but when I do, they need to feel tailored. The Sezane Rome shorts work because they’re cut more like a trouser than a casual short. High-waisted, structured, and polished enough that the outfit doesn’t feel underdressed. Sezane brings them back every season, which tells you something.

To keep this looking appropriate for dinner, a crisp button-down tucked in (like my embroidered shirt), or a sleeveless sweater keeps it elevated. Leather sandals and simple jewelry keeps the outfit from becoming too casual.

I also love this pair with a 7″ inseam, and this one that comes in a few really good colors.

Short Linen Dress (An Easy Option That Always Works)

A short linen dress is usually my first choice for a casual summer dinner. It’s comfortable, looks good, and just feels right for a warm night out.

This linen blend dress is one I’d wear for something a little more casual. The buttons give it just enough detail. If you prefer a print, I also really like this one.

I usually keep everything else simple. A flat sandal or espadrille, and a woven bag. If I want it to feel like a dressier dinner outfit, I’ll switch to a wedge or a low heel.

Chic Jumpsuit + Wedge Heels (Easy Dinner Outfit That Feels Put Together)

A jumpsuit is one of the easiest ways to feel pulled together for dinner. One piece, and done. For summer evenings I look for something in a breathable fabric, cotton or linen. A defined waist makes the difference between polished and shapeless, especially at 5’2″ where an unstructured jumpsuit can overwhelm.

This wide-leg gingham jumpsuit is exactly the kind I’d wear to a nice summer dinner. I’d wear it with wedge sandals to keep it more casual chic, or these gold heels to dress it up a bit more. The heels are one of my most worn, and you can take 15% off with TARA15.

If you want something with more of a statement, this tie-knot jumpsuit is it. The bodice does all the work, which means the rest of the outfit can stay simple. I’d pair it with my favorite neutral block heels for a more casual evening, or the gold heels when I want to feel a little more polished.

Maxi Dress + Heeled Sandals (For a Nicer Summer Dinner)

A maxi dress is one of the easiest ways to make a summer dinner outfit feel more elevated. The longer length naturally feels more polished, even when the styling stays simple.

This is the outfit I reach for when I know the restaurant is a little nicer, or I just want to feel more put together. Still comfortable, just a little more intentional than a casual dinner look.

I’m wearing this maxi dress from Hill House. It’s one of their classic silhouettes that comes back every season in new prints. I love when you find a dress that works, and you can get it in multiple colors.

I wear it with a simple heeled sandal (Take 15% off mine with TARA15) and keep the accessories minimal. The dress really does all the work here.

What to Wear to a Summer Dinner Party (From Casual to Dressy)

A summer dinner party can mean a lot of different things. A backyard with string lights and good wine is a very different evening than a rooftop restaurant or a formal dinner. The outfits don’t have to be complicated but they do need to match the setting.

For a casual backyard dinner, a sundress or linen pants with a pretty top is exactly right. Keep your shoes practical, a flat sandal rather than a heel, because grass and heels are never a good combination.

For a rooftop or nicer restaurant, step it up one level. A jumpsuit, a dress, or wide-leg trousers with a fitted top all work well. A heeled sandal pulls the look together without feeling overdressed.

For a formal summer dinner, the midi or maxi dress is your answer. Simple accessories, a good shoe, and you’re done.

When in doubt, dress one level up from what you think is expected. You’ll never regret being the most pulled-together person at the table.

Summer Dinner Outfit FAQ

What do you wear to a summer dinner at someone’s house?

I usually keep it simple with a dress, or linen pants with a good top always works. It should feel a little more put together than what you’d wear during the day, but not like you’re dressed up.

Are jeans okay for a summer dinner?

Yes, especially in white or a light wash. I wear them all the time. Just add a top with a little detail and a good sandal, and it feels right for dinner.

Can you wear flats to a summer dinner party?

Yes. I wear flats most of the time. A leather or metallic sandal still looks polished, and it’s a lot more comfortable for a long night out.

Once you have a few go-to outfits like these, getting dressed for summer dinners becomes so much easier.
These are the combinations I come back to over and over again.
