17 Timeless Fall Trends to Try
Fall Bags
Burgundy Bags
Two very “fall like” colors are dominating the runways this season. And I love them both! Burgundy is fall’s “it” color when it comes to bags. It’s not too surprising since burgundy is a traditional fall color. This season it’s just taking the reign. I’m really happy about this one since its one of my favorite colors for bags. A classic, deep burgundy leather bag never goes out of style. Burgundy is more versatile than you think too. Pair this gorgeous color with all your neutrals like ivory, gray, navy, tan, and black. Style tip- this color looks gorgeous paired with pink for valentines day!
Olive Green Bags
The other color trend this fall season is olive green. This deep mossy shade ties in well with Fall’s latest styles. Some greens will be more earthy green and neutral in tone, while other shades of olive green will be more warm and yellow toned. I love this color styled with winter white outfits, as well as mixing it in with navy and even black.
As far as bag styles go, top handle bags, which are classically lady-like, are top choices. Followed by east-west bags which are more horizontal in shape. However you can’t go wrong with choosing any timeless bag style. This season’s colors may be trending high this fall, but they are timeless fall color choices.
Fall Clothing Trends
1950s Heiress Style
Inspired by the tv series The Swans, 1950’s and 60’s style is trending this season. It’s no big surprise since quiet luxury has been having a big moment. It’s all about understated elegance. Shift dresses, leather gloves (your glove size is usually the same as your shoe size), and A-line skirts will be big this season. This is about as classic as you can get with trends!
Fall Trends: Boho Chic
This fall season’s boho-chic style is more about an attitude towards carefree and romantic styles. Think of classic Chloe with its ruffles and impeccable tailoring. This is actually a very classic way of dressing that never really went out of style. We will be wearing more lace tops with flare leg jeans, knee high boots, and relaxed floral dresses. Keep it modern boho chic by pairing more feminine styles with a blazer or tailored coat. It’s all about balance.
Timeless Style: Check Print
Plaids and check may just be the most timeless and iconic fall print. It’s tough to classify this one as a trend but it’s been seen all over the fall runway which gives it trend status. You can wear this timeless trend as plaid printed blazers, gingham pants, or a check skirt. This fun pattern is one to reach for year after year. These prints pair so well with cozy knits.
Satin Outfits
Satin is another timeless fabric that is all over the fall runway. It’s time to pull out the satin slip skirts from last fall and wear them again. Dark brown is trending high this year. It’s such a rich fall color. Wear a matching set like this silk skirt and silk top, a silk dress, or style your satin pants with a cozy fall sweater. If you want to really play up this trend, style it with brown heels. These chocolate suede pumps fit true to size and come in standard and roomy widths. Plus you can take 15% off with TARAFHM15.
I want to note that I’ve tried many slip skirts in the attempt to find one that fits well, and lays just right. You want this to look ultra chic. I really love the sets from Quince. They are super affordable since they follow a factory direct model (no middleman prices). I highly recommend you try them!
Fall Jeans
Wide-leg jeans still reign supreme. I love the classic yet modern look of wide-leg jeans. They are surprisingly flattering too. They give petites the illusion of being taller, and help to balance out your silhouette. The extra width of the pants help to make the waist appear smaller. Any body type can pull these off. I have a post on what shoes to wear with wide-leg pants if you need some more inspiration.
If wide-leg jeans are not for you, you can try a slimmer version like the slim palazzo jeans (these fit true to size but slightly large), or you can totally stick with your straight-leg jeans. They are still very much in style. Here are some wide-leg jeans that I love:
Cozy Knits
As far as cozy knits go, the roll-neck or turtleneck, is fall’s style of choice. What I love about this one is that you can add your personal touch by wearing chunky roll-necks, or more tailored and slim versions. This is an easy way to elevate your outfits and add a bit of luxury. Wear it on its own or under a coat or blazer for extra layers. This outfit I’m wearing if from the British brand, Holland Cooper. They make very soft roll neck sweaters.
Fall Fashion: Olive and Earthy Green
Earthly shades of green like khaki and olive are trending high this fall season. While the top 3 fall colors this fall are olive green, burgundy, and mellow yellow, olive green feels the most timeless. It’s safe to incorporate this trendy color into your classic wardrobe with clothing pieces, shoes and accessories. If you’re wondering what other colors to wear with olive green, shades of cream and ivory will be the most striking. Feel free to wear this seasonal color with pinks, tan, beige, burgundy, navy blue, and even gray.
Monochrome Outfits
Another one of the timeless fall trends that never went out of fashion. Monotone, or monochrome outfits like this one are a big trend for fall. Wearing the same color from top to bottom creates a chic and elegant look. Plus it makes getting dressed easier by not having to figure out a matching set for your top or bottom. A great place to easily find monochrome looks is this sustainable brand. They have super affordable prices with high-quality designs. It’s one of my favorites to shop for fall.
Fall Trends: Outerwear
We are seeing more cropped outerwear this season. They are great to wear with this season’s wide-leg jeans. The cropped length jackets and coats will balance out the wider leg. As for fabric, try wearing wool, tweed, or leather.
Cardigans
Is a cardigan even a trend? The fall runways says it is. We will be seeing and wearing more cardigans this fall season. Try yours in neutrals that go with everything, or in this season’s trending colors like burgundy, earthy green, brown, or mellow yellow. Wear it open with a tank or tee underneath, or button it up for lady like style. I love these paired with everything from jeans, to skirts, and pants.
Fall Trends: Leopard Print is Back
This 2024 fall season is seeing leopard print in full effect. Everything from clothing, shoes, and accessories are decorated in this print. If a leopard dress is too much animal print for you, try wearing leopard print shoes instead. You can easily incorporate this fall trend into your classic accessories. You just need a touch of leopard to update your look.
Fall Shoe Trends
Pointed Toe Shoes
Accessories like shoes and bags are the two key categories that really fall into trend status. They change the most year after year. That’s why it’s always a good idea to keep your shoes (even if you store them away for future use). This season is all about the pointed toe. Love it or hate it, it’s back. Admittedly, I love the look of a pointed toe. They give a sleek look under wide-leg jeans and pants. Plus they give the illusion of height, which is great for us petites. This pair of pointed toe ballet flats does not restrict the toes at all. I’m all about comfort first, so here are my recommendations for pointed to shoes that are beautiful but comfortable too.
Square Toe Shoes
Square toe shoes are back in a big way. I recently featured them in my best fall shoes post. Just about every shoe brand has introduced their version of this latest fall shoe trend. Love them or hate them, they are back! I think the key to wearing square toe shoes is to balance out your look. The square toe has a very geometric shape. Balance this with soft, flowy fabrics and feminine lines. A satin slip skirt or straight-leg jeans both work really well and timeless with square toe shoes. If you don’t love the abrupt square toe look, try these more subtle square toe styles:
Mary Jane Shoes
Mary Jane shoes are quite possibly my favorite of all the fall trends. The strap adds an extra detail to your outfit while also providing support. All heel heights are trending this fall. From Mary Janes heels to flat Mary Jane shoes. I’m here for all of them! I’m especially loving the flat Mary Janes with straight-leg jeans for a très chic vibe. If you are opting for Mary Jane heels, wear them under your wide leg jeans or with your dresses and skirts this fall. These Mary Jane flats have been a go-to of mine for their comfort and softness. I have them in two colors now.
Here are some more Mary Jane shoes to wear this season:
Classic Accessories: Belts
Belts are another accessory that we are seeing more of this season. In addition to wearing belts with jeans and pants, try adding them to matching skirt sets and dresses to give your waist some definition. You can choose timeless colors like cognac, black, and chocolate brown, or go with fall’s trending color palette of olives and burgundy.
How To Look Timeless When Following Trends
Being a lover of timeless style, I choose to follow the trends cautiously. By using fall trends, and trends in general, as a guide, you can update your wardrobe while still remaining classic. Here are some tips to keep in mind when investing in trends:
- Keep the silhouette classic. For example, you can take a classic style shirt but choose it in a trending color. This ensures that the style will not be dated. You can also choose a timeless bag shape in the latest color. Again, the style will reman timeless, but you will have more color variety in your wardrobe in the long-run.
- Choose more affordable options. If you must have the latest trend, don’t overspend. Save your money for timeless investments that never go out of style. Choose more affordable options when buying into trends just for the sake of it.
- Invest in Accessories. Instead of buying into all the latest fall trends, choose some accessories to add to your current wardrobe. This may be a handbag, shoes, a silk scarf in the latest fall color palette, a leather belt, or hair accessories.
Let me know in the comments below which fall trend you will be wearing!
