A lot depends on the venue. You want that balance between classy and comfortable, with outfits that feel feminine, timeless, and effortlessly chic. Whether it’s a Napa getaway, a summer trip to the Hamptons, or a local vineyard visit, I’m sharing wine tasting outfits that go from casual vineyard strolls to fancier tasting rooms.

What Is Wine Tasting

Wine tasting is really all about sipping different wines and learning a little about the grape variety, regions, and how they’re made. But the vibe really depends on where you go. Some tastings are in a cozy indoor space, while others have you walking through the vineyard or standing at an outdoor tasting bar.

That’s why knowing what kind of experience you’re going to is so helpful. It makes choosing outfits so much easier. You want something that feels polished and feminine, but still comfortable enough to enjoy the day without overthinking it.

How To Dress For Wine Tasting

Usually there is no strict dress code for wine tasting, but it helps to check out the venue first. As a general guide, here are a few tips to help you decide what to wear to a wine tasting.

Avoid Strong Fragrances

Smell is such a big part of the wine tasting experience. When you swirl your glass of wine, you want to pick up the tasting notes of fruit, spice, or oak, not compete with your perfume. Not only can a strong fragrance compete with the subtle aromas in your glass, and it can affect other guests’ tasting experience. It’s best to skip heavy perfumes altogether, but if you do want to wear something, go with a light scent or lotion, applied hours before your tasting.

Choose Comfortable Shoes

Not every wine tasting is just sitting inside with a glass or two. Sometimes these events have you walking through vineyard rows, crossing gravel, or heading from one tasting room to the next. That’s why I usually go for something comfortable but still stylish, like leather loafers, ankle boots, or classic flats. If it’s more of an indoor tasting, you can absolutely wear heels, but I’d stick with a block heel just in case you end up outside on grass. No one wants to be sinking into the ground with a glass of wine in hand!

Layer for Changing Weather

Since most wine tastings are outdoors, layering is a must. I always bring a lightweight blazer, cardigan, or denim jacket. You can slip it off in a warm tasting room, then throw it back on while strolling the vineyard. It helps keep you comfortable, no matter the temperature. A classic blazer pairs beautifully with a midi dress or a top and jeans, while a denim jacket works with just about anything.

Keep Your Hands Free

When you’re tasting wine, a crossbody or small shoulder bag is a must. You’ll want your hands free to swirl your glass, and snap photos of the vineyard views. Plus, it keeps your outfit effortless while holding only the essentials.

Wine Tasting Outfits

Whether you’re wandering a vineyard, sipping in a cozy tasting room, or taking a tour through wine country, these wine tasting outfits have you covered.

Casual Wine Tasting Outfit for Vineyard Days

Think relaxed but chic. This is actually my go-to outfit for a fall or early spring tasting. I love how a great pair of jeans instantly feels elevated when styled with a tailored jacket. Just pair your favorite straight-leg or wide-leg jeans with a lightweight blouse and blazer, then add ankle boots or leather loafers. Don’t forget a small bag for hands-free exploring. This look has the perfect balance between polished and comfortable. It’s great for strolling between tastings or lingering over a glass at the bar.

Summer Wine Tasting Outfit Ideas

A nice cold glass of rosé on a summer afternoon is pure perfection. For a summer wine tasting, you can’t go wrong wearing a breezy sundress, flat sandals, and a woven bag (this bag is one of my favorites and you can choose the ribbon color). It’s light, comfortable, and easy to wear while moving between tasting rooms or relaxing on a sunny terrace. Add a delicate necklace and gold hoops to finish off the look. This outfit is perfect for sunny vineyard afternoons or warm outdoor tastings.

Fall Wine Tasting Outfit with Layers

A midi skirt with a soft sweater and knee-high boots (or flats if you prefer), has that perfect fall vineyard feel. Pair it with a small shoulder bag and layer a blazer if it gets chilly. It’s the kind of outfit that’s both comfortable and elevated, making it perfect to wear for indoor tastings at upscale wineries, or chic wine bars where you want to feel put-together.

Weekend Wine Tasting with Friends

Sometimes you just want a one-and-done look, which is why I always gravitate towards dresses. They are easy, require no thinking about matching a top to a bottom, and can be easily styled up or down depending your shoes. A flowy maxi dress with ankle boots is the perfect mix of feminine and relaxed. Adding a small shoulder bag keeps your hands free for sipping and conversation. It’s an elevated but effortless outfit combination that works for long afternoons of wine tasting with friends.

Spring Winery Outfit

There’s something so fresh about a white dress in wine country. It just feels easy and timeless against all those green vines. I like pairing it with ballet flats for comfort, and a woven bag to keep things relaxed. Spring weather can be unpredictable so bring a cardigan or light blazer just incase. This combo is perfect for tasting rooms that call for a slightly more dressed-up look.

You might be thinking that white isn’t a good idea for what to wear to a wine tasting. But if you love it like I do, it looks beautiful in the setting and feels chic. If you’d rather not worry about spills, soft neutrals or beige give the same clean look without the worry. Check out my post on neutral color outfits for women for more inspiration.

Final Thoughts on What to Wear to a Wine Tasting

Sometimes the hardest part of a wine tasting isn’t the tasting itself, it’s figuring out what to wear. With a few classic, feminine pieces, the right shoes, and layers for changing weather, you can feel stylish no matter the venue. These outfit ideas make it easy to look effortless. Just  keep it simple, comfortable, and timeless, and most importantly, enjoy the wine (and the company) without stressing about your outfit.
