Spring Capsule Wardrobe
A spring capsule wardrobe consists of essential pieces you can wear all season long, and even mix and match with each other. Everyone who has written about a capsule wardrobe, has their own version of what it should be. Most will say a blazer, trench coat, jeans, etc. All of that is well and good, but here I’m sharing my version of a spring capsule wardrobe for those looking for an updated, effortless and feminine way of dressing. This is what I reach for every spring. I may add in a new version but I’m wearing these key pieces.
What Should Be in a Spring Capsule Wardrobe
1. Ivory or White Jeans
I love my jeans. Most often I prefer medium rinse jeans that are not too light or not too dark. For spring in particular, I favor white, ivory, or ecru jeans. It’s time to lighten up after months of wearing darker winter colors. The trick to finding the right pair of white jeans is to choose wider leg jeans. This makes them more wearable for more occasions. White jeans can can be a smart way to elevate your look. They are a spring capsule wardrobe staple that look a bit more polished than regular denim jeans.
My ivory jeans of choice are these wide leg jeans (worn in both photos above). They almost look like pants which is what I love about them. Not too tight, not see through, but is everything you want in a pair of well-fitting jeans. Plus they go with everything! Style your white or ivory jeans with a striped cotton sweater for a spring nautical look.
Love these white jeans:
2. Spring Capsule Wardrobe: Easy Cotton Sweater
An easy cotton sweater that is lightweight for Spring is a key layering piece. Wear this alone paired with pants, or under a blazer or trench coat for chilly spring days. This soft pink cotton sweater adds just the right amount of color to a minimalist outfit. Pink is actually a great neutral for spring. You can pair it with beiges and whites, navy, and your white jeans. Although neutral colors are best for Spring capsule wardrobes (they are more versatile), I do like to add a bit of color as well.
3. Spring Capsule Wardrobe Essential: Neutral Dress
You should have at least one neutral dress to reach for. This can take the place of pants for dressier occasions, or be your casual choice for days you just want something easy to wear. Just by changing out your shoes, you can wear this to so many different occasions. I love this ivory guipure lace dress paired with gold heels, or even with flats for more casual outings. If you are looking for a more casual neutral dress to add to your spring capsule wardrobe, try a simple cotton dress.
4. Denim Jean Jacket
A denim jacket is an essential to a spring capsule wardrobe. I love how they can instantly make a dressy outfit casual, or just add a polished layer to a look. For a more feminine touch, I prefer denim jackets with a slight puff sleeve. It adds a special detail and makes the look more modern.
This outfit is my favorite kind of elevated casual look. The neutral dress, classic leather bag, and puff sleeve jean jacket makes for a really stylish and effortless spring outfit. You can wear this with flats or heels depending on your mood.
5. Striped Sweater or Tee
Florals may reign supreme for Spring, but I also really love stripes this time of year. A striped top is essential to a spring capsule wardrobe. Whether it is a navy striped sweater or tee, adding this pattern really freshens up a look. It’s minimal, chic and pairs well with florals. This nautical inspired outfit is a classic way to transition into spring dressing. I love light cotton stripe sweaters for chilly spring days and nights. Pair it with your white jeans, neutral pants, or regular denim.
6. Neutral Pants: Spring Capsule Wardrobe
A great pair of neutral color pants should be in every spring capsule wardrobe. I like a tan, camel, or beige color to keep the overall palette light and refreshing. This neutral color pairs well with everything from other neutrals, to black, to pastels, or brighter hues. To read more about how much I love these pants, read my Full Sezane Review here.
In addition to the beiges, navy is a great Spring neutral. Although it is blue, I do consider it a neutral color as it really does pair nicely with all colors (yes, black included although for Spring I may steer aways from navy and black, to keep the palette lighter). Everyone needs at least one pair of pants that can match just about everything. I love the high waist of the pants I am wearing, but also really love these light neutral cotton pants.
7. Short Sleeve Sweater
A short sleeve sweater is a great workwear staple as it’s polished enough for the office, but also chic enough to wear for going out. I like to have a neutral color on hand. Or if it has stripes, even better! Wear this with your neutral pants for office appropriate attire, or your wide-leg jeans for a casual nautical look.
8. Comfortable But Chic Flats
Heels are gorgeous but for everyday Spring dressing, I choose a pair of comfortable flats. If you only choose one pair, choose a neutral like these Saddle Natalie flats if you like a pointed toe, or these more traditional ballet flats (take 20% off with THEFASHIONHOUSEMOM) . The darker cognac color goes with everything and is so chic and classic. This color will pair best for your spring capsule wardrobe.
To add variety to your spring looks, I would also introduce a woven loafer or mule to your wardrobe. This texture transitions nicely into the summer season and adds a special interest to your look. I’m wearing a classic straw mule from Stubbs and Wootton (20% off with code THEFASHIONHOUSEMOM). These are an investment but they just get more comfortable wear after wear. I also really love this more affordable woven shoe option. You can read more about my Stubbs and Wootton Review here.
9. Classic Leather Handbag
A classic leather handbag is always a timeless choice, and it wears better with age. If you are going to choose only one, I suggest choosing a dark neutral like a cognac tan. I think this color serves all seasons. Black is another option if you wear black all year around. I tend to keep my wardrobe palette lighter in spring and summer, and mostly reserve my black bags for fall and winter. However tan is great for any season. And don’t worry about matching your shoes to your bag. You can if you want to pull the look together, however pulling a color from your outfit works just as well.
I love this classic leather handbag for its timeless look. It reminds me of the Celine Classic bag in the box calfskin. The sizes are very similar however the prices are not! The Celine bag measures 9″x 7″ x 3″ (retails $4200) and the Sezane Milo bag version measures 9.4″ x 6.7″ x 1.8″ (retails $475).
10. Spring Capsule Wardrobe: White Blouse
A white blouse is an all-weather wardrobe essential. You know I love a little detail to it too. A simple white top is taken from ordinary to extraordinary by adding some little details. This white ruffle top looks effortless with jeans and so chic with pants. This is a great work to weekend outfit when layered under a blazer or cardigan. It even looks great with shorts. A favorite white shirt is a spring capsule wardrobe must-have! I’m wearing it here with my favorite wide-leg jeans (these jeans fit true to size with some stretch) and with my Guspa sweater cardigan (wearing size XS).
I hope you enjoyed this spring capsule wardrobe review. These are all my tried and true spring season favorites! Let me know if you have any questions. And don’t forget to pin this post so you can refer to it later!
