National Consignment Day Celebrates Sustainable Fashion
Did you know there is an official National Consignment Day? National Consignment day is an official holiday founded by The RealReal. It falls on the first Monday of October and celebrates the positive impact consigning has on the environment. The RealReal is a sustainable luxury company that aims at extending the lifecycle of luxury items through consignment. Ready to hear more?
The fashion industry is one of the top polluting industries in the world. The RealReal has partnered with leading environmental consulting firm Shift Advantage and sustainable textile leaders from the World Resources Institute, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and Stella McCartney as sustainability consultants. According to their calculator methodology, there has been a 400% increase in clothing consumption in the last 2 decades. Fashion has a bigger impact to the world’s carbon footprint than avian. In fact it contributes to 10% of the total carbon footprint. Furthermore, 95% of clothing that is thrown away can be re-worn, re-used, and recycled!
How Can You Make An Impact?
Celebrate National Consignment Day by going through your wardrobe and consigning the pieces you no longer love. Remember, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure! Check out The RealReal designer list to see if your items meet their designer requirements. For any non-luxury or designers that don’t meet The RealReal requirements, check your local consignment shops or your local Dress For Success. This is a great way to give new life to the pieces that no longer suit you. You are positively impacting the planet as well as a person’s heart. Dress For Success donations help to empower women through providing support groups, professional clothing, and development tools to help them to achieve and thrive in work and life.
Ready to Consign?
During October only, you can earn up to $125 extra when you consign at The RealReal by scheduling a free in-home white glove appointment (The RealReal will come to help you consign and take care of everything). You can also visit any of The RealReal stores or Luxury Consignment offices to drop off your items. Another option is to request a free shipping label and simply send in the items you want to sell.
Why is Consigning Smart and Sustainable?
When you consign, not only do you earn some money back for your items, you extend their life and soften their environmental impact on the planet. Since January 2012, consignors at The RealReal have helped save 1.3 billion glasses of water- that’s 329 million liters, and counting! Do your part and go through your closet today to help keep the sustainability cycle moving! On the hunt for a new bag? Try searching for pre-loved consignment items first!

Yes I have been doing more preloved shopping and renting and not doing too much fast fashion purchasing.
