AYR Jeans Review: The Secret Sauce, The Legend, & The Lala
I’ve been wearing AYR jeans for years. AYR, which stands for All Year Round, makes some of the best denim I’ve found, and this AYR jeans review has been a long time coming. My Pop and my Lala were my first pairs from the brand, the Pop now being retired. So when AYR reached out about a collaboration this spring and offered to send me two new pairs to try, I said yes without hesitation. I already knew they’d be good.
The two styles they sent me are the Legend and the Secret Sauce. And because the Lala, one of my longtime favorites, just restocked after a long stretch of being sold out, I’m including that one too. I have thoughts on all three. Real ones, not just “I love them” (though I do).
AYR was founded in New York and produces all of its denim in Los Angeles. Small batch production, obsessive fit testing, and styles that are designed to wear all year round and last. It’s a brand that operates the way I think about getting dressed. Quality over quantity, always.
Why AYR Has Earned a Permanent Place in My Wardrobe
Before I get into the specific styles of this AYR jeans review, I want to talk about something that doesn’t get enough attention in denim conversations: the inseam. AYR offers short, regular, and long inseams on most of their jeans. I can’t tell you how much I wish every denim brand did the same. There’s nothing more frustrating than spending extra money to get jeans hemmed. And I hear the same frustration from taller women who can never find a long enough inseam. The need is real on both ends and AYR solves for both.
I can only speak from my own experience, and I’m 5’2″. If you’re on the petite side, you know that finding jeans that fit without a trip to the tailor is less common than it should be. AYR isn’t like that. They build the short inseam into their core sizing, which means the proportions are designed for a shorter leg from the start. That’s the core of why I keep coming back. That said, inseam lengths vary by style, so it’s worth checking before you order so you know what shoes will work best.
AYR Legend Jeans

The Legend is a moderate straight leg with a high rise. It holds you in and lifts you up in the way a great pair of jeans should. They are a more rigid style and fit snug at first, but just like my experience with the Pop and the Lala, they break in after just one wear.
On my 5’2″ frame in the short inseam, they hit just below the ankle. A small heel is where these shine, and I’ve been reaching for my Margaux Paloma sandals with them most often. That little bit of lift keeps the leg line long and the proportions right. I think they look fine with flats if you’re a bit taller, but at my height I prefer the heel with this particular length. They’ve already made it onto my dinner outfit rotation and I don’t see them leaving anytime soon.
If you’re comparing denim brands, I also shared my thoughts in my Mother jeans review, which covers the styles I reach for most from that brand.
AYR Secret Sauce Jeans

The name says it all, really. The Secret Sauce is AYR’s most iconic style, and after wearing them I completely understand why. The wide straight leg has a relaxed but tailored quality that feels effortless without looking sloppy. It’s the kind of jean that looks like you thought about it without actually having to.
Fair warning: they fit snug at first. Don’t let that discourage you. After the first wear they break in beautifully and mold to your body in exactly the right way. I’d go true to size here.
On my 5’2″ frame in the short inseam, the length works well with a two inch heel, which is my preference with this silhouette. I’m wearing mine with my Sezane slim fit knit (I love the balance with the jeans), my Margaux Paloma sandals, and a cognac bag. It’s becoming one of those combinations I keep reaching for. That said, I’ve also worn them with my Adidas Sambas and they work just as well. The wide leg is forgiving enough to wear with a flat if that’s your preference.
If you’re wondering what shoes work best with this silhouette, I shared more options in my guide on what shoes to wear with straight leg jeans.
AYR The Lala

The Lala was the second style I tried from AYR, right after the Pop, and I’ve had mine for years. It helped set the bar for what I now expect from denim. For a while I worried they were discontinuing it entirely since most sizes had been sold out for so long. I’m glad they brought it back. The New York Times Wirecutter named it one of the best women’s jeans. Having worn them for years, I’m not surprised.
Where the Legend is a moderate straight leg, the Lala is slimmer through the ankle. It’s a true 1990s straight cut, fitted without being tight. The denim itself feels noticeably substantial. Not stiff, just the kind of quality you can tell immediately when you pull them on.
On my 5’2″ frame in the short inseam, they hit right below the ankle, about an inch shorter than the Legend. That makes them perfect for a low shoe, and my Margaux Ada ballet pumps are my go-to pairing. Ballet flats, loafers, a pointed-toe flat, they all look really great with this silhouette.
A Few Fit Notes for Petites
These AYR jeans run in short, regular, and long inseams. The short inseams generally work for my 5’2″ frame without tailoring (as long as I choose the shoes right). Even the short inseam is different on every style of jeans. The length is always noted in the sizing section, so be sure to check that out so you know what shoes will work. Generally on inseams 29″ and shorter, I prefer to wear flats, while anything longer than that, I prefer a small heel.
The Legend is classic straight leg (think 90s chic); the Secret Sauce is a loose straight leg; and the Lala are your classic slim straight leg. I’d go true to size in all styles. The denim washes well and keeps its shape.
If you’re petite and unsure about wider silhouettes, I share more tips in my guide on how to wear wide-leg jeans for petites.
Are AYR Jeans Worth It? (My Honest AYR Jeans Review)

After years of wearing this brand yes, completely worth it. The quality is the kind that ages well rather than just holding up, and that’s the difference. My Pop and my Lala looked better and felt better after a year of wear than they did on day one. I expect the same from the Secret Sauce and the Legend.
If you’ve been curious about AYR, this is genuinely one of the better denim investments you can make. The multiple inseam lengths are reason enough to start here, and the quality will keep you coming back. I hope this AYR jeans review helps you decide which style might work best for you.
And if you’re curious about the styles I’m wearing, I’ve linked them all below so you can see the available washes. AYR produces their denim in small batches, which is part of why certain styles sell out for stretches of time.
