Styling an outfit with color can be daunting, especially if you live in neutrals or blacks. Here I will give you some tips for using color in any outfit. For some, this might be easy and fun, while for others this might leave you scratching your head. Whichever boat you are in, I hope I can provide some inspiration for you to be creative in your own way.

Choosing your inspiration item

The first step to styling any outfit is to find your inspiration item. The inspiration item is the one piece that will pull everything together. Now, I will be the first to say that more often than not, shoes are actually my starting point. I love styling outfits around a great pair of shoes. However, here my inspiration item is this beautiful sweater. This was my first piece from this brand and I am sold! It is soft and chunky which I love in a winter sweater. And I absolutely love the colors and design of the fair isle. This is an inspirational piece because of all the colors you can pull out of it. I plan on styling this sweater in so many different ways so stay tuned!

Choosing your anchor item

Your anchor item will be your neutral. My favorite anchor item for a casual look is a pair of jeans. They really are a staple and go with just about everything. You can also choose a pair of black pants, or a skirt. I love a brown midi skirt to anchor a variety of looks. There are no rules except that this piece will be the glue to the other pieces you choose.

Finding your color palette

Next is to decide on your color palette. This sweater gives loads of options for choosing to highlight a color. I chose to pull out the pink with these fun color block boots from Sezane. If you think your options are limited with color blocked shoes, see how I also wore these boots here. They really are a fun option and I bet you will wear them more than you think.

Now, if your inspiration piece did not have a variety of colors in it, (maybe it was a pair of red shoes), then your color palette is already decided for you. But you can still choose to add a complimentary color. I love mixing colors to add individuality to an outfit. Let’s say your outfit consists of red shoes (your inspiration item) and black pants (your anchor item). Be creative and let your top finish off your palette. Here’s an example of a great outfit that is not boring:

I hope this was helpful in inspiring you to create your own colorful look.  Let me know in the comments if you would like to see more of this type of post.
