Shopping tips

You get sucked into the friends & family coupon you have received in your inbox. You browse the site and start adding things to your cart. Nothing you need right now, but these are all things that you “might need someday”. I remember specifically buying a dress with the thought of wearing it at a cafe on the Italian coast. I pictured myself sitting there drinking a coffee overlooking the Mediterranean. It was the perfect dress for that scenario. Did I have a trip to Italy planned? No. Have I ever gone to Italy? No. Did I ever wear the dress? No.

While it is good to pick up items that you know like but may not need at the moment, try to think of 2 or 3 specific and realistic events you will wear that item to in the (very) near future. If you can’t think of any, delete it from your cart and move on. Just because there is a sale, doesn’t mean you need to join in.

Another reason we have nothing to wear is that we buy items without the overall outfit in mind. How often have you bought a great shirt but didn’t have the right bottoms to go with it? What happens to that top? It sits in your closet taking up space. You reach for it over and over again but never wear it because you don’t have the rest of the outfit. Make it a point to write down those items and make a list of things you need to make them wearable. Maybe you have a ton of skinny jeans but the top you bought really would look better with bootcut jeans. Next time you get that discount code in your inbox, focus on finding bootcut jeans.

Sometimes an outfit looks amazing on the model but doesn’t really do us justice. Move on. You don’t need this. Make it a point to try on the clothes in your closet and really think about what you like or don’t like about them. You will start to notice a trend. Maybe boxy tops just don’t work on you. No matter how cute they look on someone else. Maybe midi skirts are not really midi on you. Always buy what makes you look and feel good. If you feel good in the clothes you buy, then you will always have something to wear.

And remember trends are trends. You do not have to buy into every trend. In fact that’s just not realistic financially. Buying a few trendy pieces is a great way to stay current but don’t over do it. I only buy trendy pieces that I actually like and will actually wear. Not because it’s what everyone else is wearing.

Matching Sets- one and done!

If all else fails and you are still stuck? Buy some matching sets! You get at least 3 outfits in one. Wear together as a set, wear the top with jeans, wear the bottoms with a sweater or a t-shirt. And done! You can mix and match to your hearts desire. Your significant other will be shocked at just how fast you can get ready!

My matching set outfit is from J. Crew but is no longer available. Try shopping my picks of in-stock items below. My bag is from Shrimps and has been in my closet for years! It’s great to have a statement bag you can always reach for.
