Choosing a dress length

Choosing the right dress length can be difficult. You need to consider the formality of the event, weather, and comfort.  Most important, is what you are comfortable in.  There are no set rules.  Here’s a guide to help you choose for your next event.

Mini

While there are no rules for the length of your dress, my own rule is that the more casual the event, the shorter the dress. A shorter dress can be styled down with flat shoes or kitten heels.  I love  mini dress for a family picnic or graduation party. The print just screams summer! Pair it with these yellow sandals and you have the perfect summer mini length outfit.  It’s a casual but very well put together type of look.  The kind of outfit you can just throw on without much thought but still look great.  If the mini length is not for you, how about a midi?

Midi

A midi dress is probably the most versatile length.  They are somewhere between casual and dressy and can be made up either way depending on what type of shoe you choose.  Midi’s can be harder to pull off for those of us on the shorter side though since they often don’t quite hit at midi length, but tend to be longer.  Consider the cut and whether or not it is able to be hemmed.  I love  green dress for just about any occasion.  You really cant go wrong with this one.

Maxi

The maxi length is most formal in my opinion. While anyone can pull off a maxi (your tailor needs some business!), taller ladies can really pull them off well.  There are so many beautiful maxi’s out there right now.  If you have the option of choosing a maxi dress or skirt, consider choosing the skirt.  I love the versatility of a skirt over a dress.  It’s more wearable since you can create multiple outfits depending on the top style and color you choose.  You can make a maxi skirt more casual by wearing it with a tee, or a little dressier by adding a silk cami.  This maxi skirt is my absolute favorite. Yikes- I might need to get this one!

Asymmetric

The almost forgotten dress length is the asymmetrical.  I personally love this option, especially for us petite women who have trouble pulling off a traditional midi or maxi.  The mix of the high and low hem gives the illusion of a longer dress without all of the bulk.  Here I am wearing this beautiful floral dress from Joie.  The pattern is full of summertime butterflies.  It would be perfect for any type of garden party, outdoor wedding, or Mother’s day.  You will need an outfit for next Mother’s day.  It’s never too early to plan!
